PUBLISHERS' PREFACE.

SUPPLEMENTARY VOLUME, besides the lives of individuals recently deceased, a few belonging to more ancient times have been in- serted, which were casually omitted in the original Work.

In order to enhance the value of this edition, the series of Illustrations has been greatly extended; and the Work, in fact, now presents a very complete Scottish Portrait Gallery. It need scarcely be added, that by this combination of pictorial repre- sentation with biographic delineation, the reader is made familiar at once with the actions, the character, and the countenances of many of those distinguished persons whose genius or exploits have increased the fame of our native land.
