In 1817, the Seram- pore Vernacular School Society, in order to give youths an idea of the formation of their language, published the Dha* tushabdaja, pp. 8. " 1,000 of the more common Bengali words are given, arranged in etymological order ; the root being given first and various words in common use, formed from it by the different prepositions and formative termina- tions, sixty of the most common roots originate the whole 1,000. The method is as pleasing to a native as an alpha- betical classification of words to us. 1 * In 1821 was published Ram Kissen's VOCABULARY, ENGLISH, LATIN and BENGALI. In 1824 LAVANDIER, a teacher of Rammuhan Ray's Anglo Hindu school, translated Mylius' School Dic- tionary, A. B. pp. 300. In 1825 Haughton published a GLOS- SARY, or meaning in English, of 2,500 Bengali words used in the Batrish Singhasan, Krishna Ray Charitra, Punish Pari* hhya, Hitopadesha. In 1818 was published at Serampore an Aohidan, or Alphabetical Vocabulary of difficult words. CAREY'S DICTIONARY came out in 1815-25, in three 4to. vols., containing 80,000 words, the work of thirty years, which gave us compound words of the editor's own coining ad-libitum, the original price was Rs. 120 — but the work is entirely superseded by Haughton's admirable Dictionary, which ought to be in the hands of all school-teachers, scholars, translators, &c. Marshman published in 1827, an Abridg- ment of Carey's English and Bengali, a work very useful, containing 25,000 words. In 1827 TARACHAND CHA- KRABATI published an Anglo Bengali Dictionary of 7,500 words, 6 Rs., pp. 25, B. M. P. meagre, a mere Vocabu- lary. In 1829 Marshman published a BENGALI AND ENGLISH DICTIONARY of 26,000 words, 10 Rs., and also a reverse one of 24,000 words. But HAUGHTON'S BENGALI and ENGLISH DICTIONARY is the magnum opus, the Johnson of Bengal, a cheap reprint of this, which was published at the expense of the Court of Directors, would be a great desideratum. For translators WILLIAMS* ANGLO SANSKRIT DICTIONARY is invaluable, and ought to be in the hands of all who wish to convey knowledge through Bengali. In 1831 Jagannath Mullick published the Shabaa Kalpa Latika, pp. 387, a translation of the Amera Kosha. Rev. J. Pearson published in 1829, for the School Book Society, a SCHOOL DICTIONARY, English and Bengali, but it was a mere Vocabulary. In 1831 appeared Walker's Dictionary, abridged by Swift, 24,000 words,
