The first Prose Work and the first Historical one that appeared, was the Life of Pratapadityea the last king of Sagar Island, by Ram Bose, Ser. P., 1801, pp. 156. A work the style of which a kind of mosaic shewed how much the un- just ascendency of the Persian language had in that day corrupted the Bengali. This was followed in 1805, by the LIFE OF THE RAJAH OF KRISHNAGHUR, pp. 120, both works undertaken ; at the suggestion of Dr. Carey, the Shtutra Padvati or names of the most eminent Sanskrit writers and their works appeared in lbl7, designed to gratify the Hindu taste for writing names at the same time conveyingjo them some useful historical knowledge. GOLDSMITH'S HISTORY OF ENGLAND came out in 1819, pp. 412, by Felix Carey, an able Bengali scholar, the History doses with the peace of Amiens in 1802. A useful Glossary of techni- cal and difficult words was appended, though some names are rendered curiously — thus Admiral of the Blue is Nilpatdka- dhyearndb, Whig is Svatantreapakhapdti. A History of England on the plan of Dicken's, giving the history of the people, the pro- gress of civilisation, morals, arts, religion, is a great desider- atum. In 1819 we had Captain Stewart's MORAL TALES OF HISTORY, with selections of historical subjects, notice of England's rise from barbarism, with moral instruction, his- torical anecdotes, illustrative of friendship, industry, justice, pride, anger— the arrival of the English in India, the Rules of the Permanent Settlement In 1830 was published the Asam Buranje, HISTORY OF ASAM, and its famous shrines, by Hatiram Dakiyal, pp. 86, Ch. P., who distributed it gratis. One of the few local Histories we have. In 1829 was pub- lished at Serampur, Sadbirjea Gun, ANECDOTES OF VIR- TUE AND VALOR, A. B., pp. 239. Giving 95 Anecdotes relating to the virtues connected with the leading characters of ancient and modern history of various countries and creeds.
