The oldest newspaper, started in 1822, as " the Goliah of Hin- duism.," in opposition to Vedantism and in advocacy of widow burning and idolatry : it enrolled on its list 800 subscribers. 302. Prabkakar, Pr. P., by I. Ch. Gupta, daily, begun 1830, 10 Rs. At first a weekly under the patronage of some of the Tagores, its Editor is famed for his fine poetry ; gives news. 303. Purnachandraday, P. P. daily, begun in 1 835, by Ad. Ch. Adea, per annum 8 Us. It has maintained a steady circulation and a respectable tone. The Editor is distinguished for his literary abilities which are often displayed in this paper in articles of permanent interest. 304. Rangpur Bartabaha, begun 1847, by Nil Ratna Mukerjyea, w., 4 Rs. Commenced under the patronage of an enlightened Zemindar there Kali Chandra Ray,— the first native paper that took interest in the rural population: Female Education is advocated in it. 305. Rasaraj, 1839, 4 Rs., bi-weekly. The Punch and Weekly Despatch of Bengali. It was famous formerly for its original metrical composition. 306. Sadhuranjan, 1847, by Ishwar Chandra Gupta, W. Literary news. Some very able translations and original compositions appeared in this. 307. Saribad Burdwan, 4 Rs. annually, W. 308. Sudha Barshan, begun, 1854, a Commercial and Daily Advertiser in Hindi and Bengali.
