provenance, and of the first quarter of the XVth century. The strange though not uncommon feature of large ring rivets attached to the grip of daggers of this period may be explained as due to the fact that these rivets, while holding the plaques of the grip in position, were made hollow, not as a decoration, but for the purpose of freeing the palm of the hand from the moisture of perspiration. At a somewhat later date in the XVth century this feature may be noted in the case of the grip of the rondel dagger represented
