��Monte Alban. Within the limits of the town are several mounds, and from time to time objects of ancient art have been found in the milpas, which first called attention to the rich remains in this vicinity. Many of the objects have been obtained by Dr Solo- giiren, an enthusiastic and intelligent collector in the city of Oaxaca, who possesses the finest private collection of antiquities in Mexico.

Two miles south of the village is a group of mounds, locally known as the Mogotes of Xoxo, and connected with the main or central group are a number of outlying mounds. (See figure 8.) In 1886 Dr Sologuren made an immense excavation in the center of Mound 5, and discovered a remarkable tomb. 1
