The fundamental dif- ference between the orna- mentation of the walrus harpoon and the whaling harpoon is, therefore, that in the former the orna- mentation developed on the faces, while in the lat- ter it always developed on the sides. This is due to the fact that the two barbs of the walrus harpoon made it necessary to give the long face a wider sur- face; the decoration was then applied to this sur- face and to the opposite side.
