"Prudence Lynde is the daughter of
Fergus Lynde," he said. "You probably
don't recall him; he was a bit
before your time. He was one of the
foremost landscape painters in this
country until perhaps fifteen years
ago. Then he had a paralytic shock,
which left him absolutely helpless. He
is still alive, but I believe he has been
bedridden for years. Prudence is an
only child. Her mother died—well,
three or four years ago. She—I mean
the girl—was studying in Paris at the
time. She came home, and since then
has been painting landscapes. I've
seen her work; she has some of her
father's talent, but not—not enough.
Still, she sells, I believe, fairly well.
