the Author’s Epigramme.

The Hesperian apples of the Cyprian dame
Gaue to the nimble youth a victors fame:
Who close pursu’d by the swift virgins speed
Throws one in view, that soe hee might proceed:
Hee's gone, shee after, fleet or more than wind
Whilst with another lure hee affects her mind,
Directing once againe the Damsells chase;
But hold, they neither yet haue lost the race:
On on they runne, the youth a third lets fall,
And then Atalanta yeilds herselfe and all.
Hippomenes the Strength of Sulphur is,
Shee wife of Hermes is o’recome by his:
Who mixing loues in Cybels sacred place,
Mov’d her chast soule to wrath by that disgrace,
Transmuting in revenge their formall state
Into a Syon and a Syons mate.
Thy princely chase the letter to pourtray,
My Muse describes it in a triple way,
Depicting first the speed returning fruit,
One runne before, the third in hott pursuit:
Your eyes with ease these Emblems may behold,
But reason must the mysteryes unfold:
These things I’ve made familiar, that the mind
The treasures here inclosd may seeke and find:
What wealth i’th world or health in medicine lyes
Those two united Syons doe comprize.
