Note on the division of this work into two separately bound volumes.—With reference to this subject, the reader is asked to consult the paragraphs entitled "External form of this work," volume VII., pages xxiv.-xxv. In order to arrange the following matter so that Division II. should face Division III. (pages 1034-5), it was necessary to leave this page blank. The blank may be utilized in part to show clearly that the break between volume VII. and volume VIII. corresponds with the break in the text between the first grand division on the one hand, and the second and third grand divisions on the other. In using this work, it will be convenient, as it is also easy, to remember that
