JOHN P. JONES
John P. Jones, of Gold Hill, was born in Herefordshire, England, in 1830, and came with his parents to this country when he was less than a year old, settling in the northern part of Ohio, where he attended public school in Cleveland for a few years; in the early part of the California excitement he went to that State and engaged in mining in one of the inland counties; was subsequently a member of the State senate; went to Nevada in 1867, and since then has been entirely engaged in the development of the mineral resources of that State; was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican, to succeed J. W. Nye, Republican; took his seat March 4, 1873, and was reëlected in 1879, 1885, 1890, and 1897. His term of service will expire March 3, 1903.
