WILLIAM BOYD ALLISON


William Boyd Allison, of Dubuque, was born at Perry, Ohio, March 2, 1829; was educated at the Western Reserve College, Ohio; studied law and practiced in Ohio until he removed to Iowa in 1857; served on the staff of the governor of Iowa and aided in organizing volunteers in the beginning of the war for the suppression of the rebellion; was elected a Representative in the Thirty-Eighth. Thirty-Ninth, Fortieth, and Forty-First Congresses, and was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican, to succeed James Harlan, Republican; took his seat March 4, 1873, and was reëlected in 1878, 1884, 1890, and 1897. His term of service will expire March 3, 1903.
