Curiously enough, with Stephens the same result followed from an exactly opposite cause, and the excess of convic- tion most nobly nullified a prominent and notable career. But I feel sure that posterity will adjust the difference and that Stephens will grow more and more in our his- tory as a figure of commanding purity, sincerity, distinc- tion, and patriotism.
