ANTHONY, MARK, born at Manches- ter, England, in 1817. Landscape painter ; pupil of his uncle, George W. Anthony, fore a stone altar, the corners of which are shooting out into heads of monstrous beasts ; beside him stands an old hag who is placing before him a Brabant beauty, offering a goblet of wine ; around him are imps in many forms, twitching at his garments and performing all manner of mad tricks, sing- ing, shouting, and screaming; and the air is filled with flying demons and reptiles.
