BERRES, JOSEF VON, born at Lem- berg, Austria, May 30, 1821. Genre painter ; pupil of Munich Academy under Piloty (1866 -69), having until then served in the Austrian army where he attained the rank of colonel; commanded a regiment during the cam- paign of 1866, and was decorated with the Order of the Iron Crown. Travelled ex- tensively in the East, as far as the Cauca- sus and Astrakan. Many of his pictures bought for America.
