Studied in Bruges Academy, at Ghent, under Van Hanselaer, and in 1837-39 in Antwerp Academy ; was in Paris in 1841- 44, and in Rome in 1845, in which year he settled in London. Belongs to the realistic school, with a tendency toward Pre-Raphael- itisni, though he refused to join the Brother- hood in 1849. Has exhibited but little at the Royal Academy. Works in oil, water- colours, and in fresco. Since 1850 he has been painting a series of frescos (each H. 4 ft. 10 in. x 10 ft. 5 in.) in the Town Hall of Manchester, illustrative of the history of the city. Subjects : The Romans building a Fort at Manciuion (A.D. 60); Baptism at j York of Edwin, King of Nortlmmbria (627); Expulsion of the Danes from Manchester (about 910); Establishment of Flemish Weavers in Manchester (1330); William Crabtree observing the Transit of Venus (1639); Defence of Manchester by Bradshaw (1642).
