CHARIOT boats which men are loading with hay ; on the bank, a loaded hay-cart drawn by two horses, another by one horse, a man on horseback with a peasant woman behind, and other figures. Race of four- horse chariots, driven by Christian slaves, in the Circus Maximus, Rome, in time of Domitian, A.D. 81, the prize being life and freedom. Scene the end of the race ; the winner, the driver of the grays, is about to pass the line when he hears the bays com- ing up behind at his left, and is for a mo- ment startled lest the victory be snatched from his grasp. Painted in 187G, by order of Messrs. Kirchuer & Co., for Philadelphia Exposition, where it was awarded a medal. Original sketch (1873), medal at Vienna, now owned in London.
