A man, bearing his father upon his shoulders and holding by the right hand his wife, to whom two children are clinging, endeavours to gain the summit of a rock by means of a tree which breaks iii his grasp. Painted in 1810 ; won grand prize for history over Da- vid's Sabines. Acquired in 1818, with En- dymion and Burial of Attala, for 50,000 fr. Reveil, i. 22.
