PLUDDEMANN, HERMANN (FREI- HOLD), born at Kolberg, July 17, 1809, died in Dresden, June 24, 1868. History painter, first instructed in Magdeburg by Sieg, then pupil in Berlin of Begas, and (1831-37) of Diisseldorf Academy under Schadow ; lived at Diisseldorf until 1848, when he removed to Dresden ; treated chief- ly subjects from mediseval history, saga and poetry in the spirit of the romanticists. Well known as illustrator of several popu- lar works.
