HANKIN, ERNEST HANBURY (1865–)
Born Feb. 4, 1865 : son of Rev. D. B. Hankin : educated at Merchant Taylors', University College, London, St. Bartholomew's Hospital, and St. John's College, Cambridge : Scholar and Fellow : studied under Koch and Pasteur : Chemical Examiner and Bacteriologist, Agra, and Oudh, since 1892 : author of several papers on medical subjects, including Anthrax, Cholera, etc. : Fellow of Allahabad University.
HANNAY ( ? - ? )
Major : in the service of the E.I. Co. in the time of Warren Hastings : with permission, he left the Company's service for a time, and entered that of the Nawab of Oudh, 1778 : managed the district of Gorakhpur : disturbances in it were said to be owing to his oppression and misconduct. The Nawab dismissed him in 1781, and later would not hear of his return : he took part in the war against the Rohillas in 1774, and was afterwards examined with reference to alleged cruelties practised on that people.
HARDING, FRANCIS PYM ( ? –1875)
Maj-General : entered the Army, 1838 : in the 22nd regt. at the defence of the residency at Hyderabad (Sind) on Feb. 15, 1843 : and at Miani on Feb. 17 : dangerously wounded : Persian interpreter to Sir C. Napier in the Afridi expedition, and the forcing of the Kohat Pass, 1850 : in the Crimea, at all the battles, 1854–5 : C.B. : Maj-General in 1868 : died Feb. 26, 1875.
HARDING, RIGHT REV. JOHN, D.D. (1805–1874)
Born Jan. 7, 1805 : son of William Harding : educated at Westminster and Worcester College, Oxford : ordained in 1827 : rector at Blackfriars, and Secretary of the Church Pastoral Aid Society : Bishop of Bombay, 1851–68 : D.D. in 1851 : his views were of a pronounced Evangelical type: died June 18, 1874.
HARDINGE, HON. SIR ARTHUR EDWARD (1828–1892)
Second son of Henry, first Viscount Hardinge (q.v.) : educated at Eton : joined the 41st foot in 1844 : to India as A.D.C. to his father, when Governor-General (1844–8) : was in the first Sikh war of 1845–6, at the battles of Mudki, Firozshahr and Sobraon : exchanged to the Coldstream Guards in 1849 : in the Q.M.G.'s Department in the Crimea, 1854–5, at all the battles : Brevet-Major and C.B., 1857 : Equerry to the Prince Consort and afterwards to Queen Victoria : Maj-General, 1871 : commanded a Division in Bengal, 1873–8 : C. in C. of the Bombay Army, 1881–5 : General, 1883 : K.C.B. and C.I.E. in 1886 : Governor of Gibraltar, 1886–90 : died July, 1892, from the effects of a carriage accident.
