HILL, HEADON (1857–)
(Nom de plume of F. Grainger) : son of Rev. J. Grainger : educated at Eton : after serving in the Army a few years in India and Egypt, he became a Journalist in London : began to write fiction, 1890 : author of Zamba the Detective, 1894; The Raja's Second Wife, 1894; Diversions of Kala Persad, 1895, and many other novels.
HILL, MARY (1790–1847)
Born March 9, 1790 : went to Calcutta with her husband, the Rev. Micaiah Hill, of the London Missionary Society's Mission, 1821–32 : removed to Berhampur, 1824, doing mission work there for 25 years, till 1847 : the oldest female missionary in the country at the time of her death : on a visit to England she originated the Walthamstow Institution for the Education of Missionaries' daughters : died Sep. 7, 1847.
HILL, SIR WILLIAM (1805–1886)
Son of the Hon. Daniel Hill, of Antigua : born 1805 : joined the Madras Army, 1821 : served in the first Burma expedition, 1824–5 : at Rangoon, Kemendine, Donabew, etc. : and in the second Burmese war, 1852–3, at Pegu : was offered the command of the Gwalior Contingent : became Brig-General of the Hyderabad contingent, 1856 : commanded the Nizam's contingent in the mutiny : engaged against Tantia Topi : Maj-General, 1861 : retired, 1861 : K.C.S.I., 1867 : died Aug. 20, 1886.
HILL, WILLIAM (1846–1903)
Entered the Indian Army in 1866 : in the Lushai expedition of 1871–2 : in the Afghan war, with the 2nd Gurkhas : was at Ali Masjid and Charasia : in the march from Kabul to Kandahar, and at the battle of Kandahar : in the Manipur expedition, 1891 : commanded the Kuram movable column in the Tirah campaign, 1897–8 : was appointed Inspr-General of Volunteers in India, August, 1901 : Maj-General : he laboured with zeal and enthusiasm to improve the utility of the Volunteer force : died in London, Sep. 7, 1903.

HIPPISLEY, SIR JOHN COXE, BARONET (1748–1825)
