edited, in 1806, Richardson's Persian and Arabic Dictionary, and wrote many valuable papers upon Indian subjects. Oxford made him a D.C.L. : the Royal Society of Literature gave him their medal as "Princeps Literaturae Sanskriticae" : he became an Associate of the French Institute : King George IV knighted him, 1833, and gave him the badge of the Guelphic Order : he was also LL.D. and F.R.S. : died May 13, 1836.

WILKINS, HENRY ST. CLAIR (1828–1896)

Son of Ven. George Wilkins : born Dec. 3, 1828 : educated at Addiscombe : joined the Bombay Engineers, 1847 : Lt-General, 1878 : General, 1882 : commanded the R.E. in the Abyssinian campaign, 1868 : A.D.C. to Queen Victoria : in the P.W.D. in the Bombay Presidency : architect of many important works : e.g. the waterworks at Aden, the Secretariat buildings at Bombay, the Dekkan College and Sassoon buildings at Poona, the palace at Bhuj, the restoration of the ancient buildings at Bijapur : died Dec. 15. 1896 : author of Reconnoitring in Abyssinia.

WILKINS, WILLIAM J. (1843–1902)

Born at Sutton Coldfield, 1843 : studied at Hackney College and Highgate : became a Congregationalist Minister : in 1867 went to India as a Missionary : for four years pastor of Union Chapel, Calcutta, but later devoted himself to Bengali evangelistic work : his experiences in India, and intercourse with educated natives, resulted in the writing of his Hindu Mythology, Vedic and Puranic, 1882, 1901; Modern Hinduism, 1881, 1901, and other works : in 1884 returned to England : died suddenly in 1902.

WILKINSON, SIR HENRY CLEMENT (1837–)

Entered the Army, 1856, and became Lt-General, 1894 : served in the Indian mutiny, 1857–8 : Inspr-General of Auxiliary Cavalry, 1877–9 : Military Secretary to C. in C., India, 1880 : commanded Cavalry Brigade, Afghanistan, 1880–81, and in Egyptian campaign, 1882 : commanded Brigades at Sealkot, Quetta, Sagar and Calcutta : and Divisions at Meerut, Rawul Pindi and Allahabad, 1880–7 : C.B., 1882 : K.C.B., 1897.

WILKINSON, OSB0RN (1822–)

Born Oct. 8, 1822 : educated at Eton and Christ's College, Cambridge : served with Jalandhar Field Force against the Sikh insurgents, 1848–9 : against Mohmand tribes, 1854, in Indian mutiny, 1858 : at the siege of Lucknow : in Oudh campaign : under Sir J . Douglas in Bihar : Brevet-Major : Adjutant of loth Bengal Cavalry : commanded 2nd Bengal Cavalry for ten years : commanded frontier post of Kohat in Afghan war, 1878–9, and was with Sir F. Roberts in the Kuram valley : C.B. : joint author of The Gemini Generals.

WILKS, MARK (1760?–1831)

Born about 1760 : went to Madras in the E. I. Co.'s military service, 1782 : Deputy Secretary to the Military Board, 1786 : Secretary to Sir B. Close's Mission to Mysore, 1787 : A.D.C. to the Governor, Madras, 1789 : A.D.C. and Military Secretary to Colonel James Stuart in the War against Tippoo, 1790–5 : Military and Private Secretary to the Governor, Lord Clive, and Town-Major of Fort St. George, 1798–1803 : Military Secretary to the C. in C, General James Stuart, 1803 : Resident in Mysore, 1803–8 : Lt-Colonel, 1808 : left India, 1808 : Governor of St. Helena, 1813–6 : Brevet-Colonel, 1814 : retired from the service, 1818 : died Sep. 19, 1831 : wrote Historical Sketches of the South of India in an Attempt to trace the History of Mysore, 1810–4 : also A Report on Government of Mysore, 1805 : and an analysis of the Akhlak-i-Nasiri, a metaphysical treatise : F.R.S. : and Vice-Presidentof the Asiatic Society.

WILLCOCKS, SIR JAMES (1857–)

Brig-General : son of Captain W. Willcocks : educated privately : entered the Indian Army, 1878 : served in Afghan war, 1879–80 : Waziri expedition, 1881 : Soudan campaign, 1885 : Burma war, 1886–9 : D.S.O. : Chin-Lushai expedition, 1889–90 : Manipur expedition, 1891 : A.A.G. to Tochi Field Force, 1897 : Brevet-Lt-Colonel : second in command, W.African Field Force, 1898 : commanded W. African Frontier Force, 1899–1900 : at relief of Kumassi : Brevet -Colonel : K.C.M.G., 1900 : wrote From Kabul to Kumassi.
