COUNCIL OF TRENT.

The Synod decrees : “ That the bodies of holy Martyrs and of others now living with Christ, which were the members of Christ, and the temple of the holy Spirit, and which shall be raised by him to eternal life, and be glorified, are to be venerated by the faithful. Through them many benefits are bestowed on men by God; so that they, who affirm, that no veneration and honour are due to the Relics of Saints, or that to honour them and other sacred monuments is useless, as likewise to celebrate the memories of Saints in order to obtain their aid—are absolutely to be condemned, as the Church has condemned, and does condemn them.” Sess. xxv. de Invocat.
