VI., and the royal significavit to the archbishop issued the nexi day 84 ; he was consecrated at Croydon 30th Aug. fol- lowing 6 , and on the 23rd of May in the next year he was translated to Chichester 86 . The see was vacant nearly two years, when a conge 1 d'elire issued 19th March 1 553-4 s ~ '; in pursuance of which, 1554 Mat u hi. GaiFFiTH 88 , archdeacon of Rochester, was 1 Mar. elected, and received the royal assent :4th March 1553 4 89 . He was consecrated in St. Saviour's church, Southwark, 1 at Apr. following ' ,and obtained restitution of the temporalities on the [8th of the same month 91 . He died at his house in Southwark 2cth Nov. 1558, and was buried in St. Magnus ohuroh, at London Bridge'. His will, dated ;th <>et. [558, was proved
