It will be observed, that these returns only refer to towns, in which personal injury or death occurred in each district, and hence convey but a very imperfect notion of the entire amount of injury of every sort inflicted.
If we take the total population of the towns of Basilicata in the preceding return at 207,000, and the combined deaths and injuries at 11,000, we have one inhabitant in every 18·82, or about 1 in 19 killed or wounded by the disaster;
