sixteenth governor of Kentucky in 1848-50. He died July 26, 1863, in Frankfort, Ky. Crittenden, Thomas Leonidas, soldier, lawyer, diplomat, merchant, was born May 15, 1815, in Russellville, Ky. In 1842 he became attorney for the commonwealth. He served in the Mexican war as a lieutenant-colonel. In 1849-53 he wag United States consul to Liverpool, England. He served with distinction through the civil war and was promoted major-general. Died Oct. 23, 1893, in Louisville,

Crittenden, Thomas Theodore, lawyer, congressman, governor, was bom Jan. 2, 1833, in Shelby county, Ky. He was appointed attorney-general of Missouri in 1864 to fill an unexpired term; and in 1873-75 and 1877-79 he was a representative from Missouri to the forty-third and forty-fifth congresses. He was the twenty-first governor of Missouri in 1881-85. He died Sept. 5, 1905, in Gloucester, Mass. Croasdale, Samuel, soldier, lawyer, was born in Pennsylvania. In 1863 he raised a company in Doylestown; and upon the organization of the one hundred and twentyeighth Pennsylvania regiment, he was appointed its colonel. At Antietam he was leading an assault under a heavy fire, when a ball killed him instantly. He died Sept 17,

Crocheron, Mrs. Augusta J., author, poet, was bom Oct. 9, 1844, in Boston, Mass. She has been recording secretary of more than a score of associations. In 1881 she published a volume of poems entitled Wild Flowers of Deseret; and in 1884 appeared Representative Women of Deseret, a biographical work. She has taken three gold medals and several cash prizes for Christmas stories. Crocheron, Henry, congressman, In 181517 he was a representative to the fourteenth congress as a democrat from New York. He died in Richmond county, N.Y. Crocheron, Jacob, congressman. In 1829-31 he was a representative from New York; to the twenty-first congress; and in 1837 was a presidential elector. Died in New York.

Crocker, Alvah, manufacturer, state senacongressman, was born Oct. 14, 1801, in Leominister, Mass. He became proprietor of a paper manufactory; was president of the Boston and Fitchburg railroad; and was a commissioner of the Hoosac tunnel. He was a member of the state legislature in 1836, 1842, and 1843; and was a member of the state senate for two terms. In 1871-74 he was a representative to the forty-second and to the forty-third congresses as a republican. He died Dec. 26, 1874, in Fitchburg, Mass. Crocker, Francis Bacon, educator, electrical engineer, inventor, author was bom July 4, 1861, in New York City. He was an inventor and practicing electrical engineer in 1883-89; and vice-president of Crocker-Wheeler electric company since 1888. Since 1889 he has been professor of electrical engineering at Columbia university. He is the author of Practical Management of Dynamos and Motors; and Electric Lighting; Electric Lighting in two volumes ; and other electrical tor,

works. Crocker, E. B., lawyer, jurist. In 1857-62 he was an associate justice of the supreme court of California. He died June 24, 1875, in Sacramento, Cal. Crocker, George Glover, lawyer, state senator, author, was born Dec. 15, 1843, in Boston, Mass. He was a member of the Massachusetts house of representatives in 1873-74; and was a member of the state senate in 1880-83. He was a lawyer of Boston, Mass. He was the author of Principles of Procedure in Deliberative Assemblies.

Crocker, Mrs. Hannah Mather, litterateur, author, was bom in 1765 in Boston, Mass. She was the author of Letters on Free Maaonary; The School of Reform; and Observations on the Rights of Woman. She died July 10, 1847, in Roxbury, Mass. Crocker, John Simpson, soldier, was bom in New York. In 1863 he was colonel in the ninety-third regiment New York volunleet infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. He died Sept. 14, 1890. Crocker, M. M. In 1864-66 he was territorial governor of Arizona. Crocker, Marcellus Monroe, lawyer, soldier, was born Feb. 6, 1830, in Franklin, Ind. He attended the United States military academy in 1847-49; and then began the practice of law in Des Moines, Iowa. He entered the army in 1861; and was appointed brigadier-general in 1862. He died Aug. 26, 1865, in Washington, D.C. Crocker, Nathan Bourne, clergyman, lecturer, was bom July 4, 1781, in Barnstable, Mass. He was elected rector of St. John's church in Providence, over which he presided until his death. He was secretary of the corporation of Brown university in 1837-43.
