Davenport, Stanley Woodward, lawyer, congressman, was born July 21, 1861, in Plymoth, Pa. In 1893-96 he was register of wills of Luzerne county, Pa. In 18991901 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the fifty-sixth congress as a democrat. Davenport, Thomas, congressman, was born in Cumberland county, Va. In 1825-35 he was a representative from Virginia to the nineteenth, twentieth, the twenty-first, twenty-second and twenty-third congresses.

Va. Davenport, Thomas, inventor, was born July 9, 1802, in Williamstown, Vt. In 1833 he began the study of electro-magnetism and in 1835 exhibited more. He died July 6,

Davenport, William, soldier, was born in North Carolina. He was appointed captain in the sixteenth infantry in 1812; and distinguished himself at Chippewa and Lundy's Lane in the war with Great Britain. He died April 12, 1858, in Philadelphia, Pa. Davenport, William, surveyor, legislator, jurist, philanthropist, was born on Oct. 12, 1770, in Culpeper coimty, Va.; contributed largely to the erection of the Female college of Lenoir, which bears his name. He died Aug. 19, 1859, in Walnut Fountain, N.C. Davenport, William, educator, clergyman, was born in 1797 in Kentucky. In 1848, with his brother, he established a school at Walnut grove, which afterward became Eureka college. He was a union man during the civil war; and wag taken prisoner by General John Morgan's men. He died June 24, 1869, in Nebraska City, Neb. Davenport, WiUiam Bates, lawyer, public official, was born March 10, 1847, in the borough of Manhattan, New York City. He was educated at the Brooklyn polytechnic and collegiate institute; and in 1867 graduated from Yale university, from which institution he has received the degrees of B. A. and M.A. Since 1870 he has been principally engaged in the profession of law in Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1889-1904 he was public 14

administrator for Kings county, N.Y.; in 1894 he was a member of the state constitutional convention; and in 1895 was a member of the democratic state committee. He is president of the board of trustees of the Memorial clinic; a trustee of the People's trust company of Brooklyn; a trustee of the Brooklyn institute of arts and sciences; a trustee of the Brooklyn art association; a trustee of Yale alumni fund; and a member of Hamilton club. New York yacht club and various other clubs and societies.

Davenport, William Edwards, clergyman, author, was born Aug." 31, 1862, in North Stamford, Conn. In 1881-96 he was a clerk in the New York postoffice; and since 1899 has been a clergyman. He is the author of The New Dispensation; Poetical Sermons; and other works.

Ellis, of North Carolina; and during the civil war was captain and major in the confederate army. He is president- of the Roanoke colony memorial association at New Bern, N.C. He is the author of The Life of Major John Daves, his grandfather. Daves, John, soldier, planter, was born in 1748 in Virginia. He was ensign, lieutenant

and captain in the continental army in the North Carolina line. In 1790-1800 he was collector of the port of New Bern. Oct. 12, 1804, in New Bern, N.C.

Davey, Robert Charles, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was bom Oct. 22, 1853, in New Orleans, La. He was a member of the state senate in 1879, and re-elected in April, 1884, and again elected in 1892. He was judge ol recorder's court in 1880-88. He for mayor of the city of New Orleans in 1888. In 1893-1908 he was a representative from Louisiana to the fiftyfifty-fourth, fifty-fifth, fifty-sixth, third, fifty-seventh, fifty-eighth, fifty-ninth and sixtieth congresses as a democrat.
