HBRRINGSHAW'S LIBRARY OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY. Ewing, James, soldier, state senator, was born Aug. 3, 1736, in Lancaster, Pa. He was a member of the general assembly in 1771-75. At tlie outbreak of the revolution he was on the committee of safety for York county; and was chosen one of the two brigadier-generals of the Pennsylvania associators, July 4, 1776. He served as vicepresident of Pennsylvania in 1782-84. He served as state senator in 1795-99. He died March 1, 1806, in Hellam, Pa. Ewing, James, lawyer, diplomat, was born July 19, 1835, in Woodford county, 111. In 1861-63 he practiced law in the courts of Illinois; and in the federal, district and supreme courts of the United States. In 1893 he was appointed minister plenipotentiary and envoy extraordinary to Belgium.

Ewing, John, clergyman, author, was bom June 23, 1732, in Nottingham, Md. He was a presbyterian clergyman of Philadelphia; and provost of the university of Pennsylvania in 1777-1802. He was the author of an Account of the Transit of Venus, and his Lectures on Natural Philosophy were issued after his death. He died Sept. 8, 1802,
