He died Oct. 15, 1805, in Providence, R.I. Fenner, Charles Erasmus, lawyer, jurist, was born Feb. 14, 1834, in Jackson, Tenn. In 1855 he was admitted to the bar. During the civil, war he served with Captain Fenner's Louisiana battery in the confederate army. In 1880-94 he was associate justice of the state supreme court of Louisiana;
and now practices

to the thirty-third, the thirtythirty-seventh and thirtyeighth congresses. In 1865-69 he was the twenty-second governor of New York. In 1869-75 he was United States senator. He was the author of Poems of Many Moods. He died Jan. 4, 1847, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Fenner, James, governor, United States senator, was born in 1771, in Providence, R.I. In 1805-07 he was United States senator. In 1807-11 and 1843-45 he was the fourth governor of Rhode Island. In 1818he was appointed chief justice of the supreme court of Rhode Island, but declined to accept that office. He was a presidential elector in 1831, 1837, and 1837; and was president of the convention that framed the state constitution in 1843. FenoUosa, Ernest Francisco, educator, lecturer, author, poet, was born Feb. 18, 1853, in Salem, Mass. In 1878-86 he was professor in the Tokio university of Japan; and in 1886-90 was connected with the Imperial museum of Tokio. In 1890-96 he was connected as curator with the museum of fine arts of Boston, Mass. He is the author of East and West, a. volume of poems. Japanese Subjects. Fenton, Hector Tyndale, lawyer, author, was born Aug. 6, 1850, in Philadelphia, Pa. He was admitted to practice law in 1870; and has made a specialty of patent and copyright cases. He is the author of American Politics; and Law of Patents and Designs.

committees. Fenton, William Matthew, soldier, merchant, statesman, was born Dec. 19, 1808, in Norwich, N.Y. For eight years he followed the sea; was a merchant at Pontiac, Mich.; and the village of Fenton was named for him. From 1842 he practiced law; in 1846-47 was a member of the Michigan state senate; and in 1848-53 was lieutenantgovernor of Michigan. During the civil war he attained the rank of colonel. For several years prior to the civil war he was register of the United States land office. He died Nov. 13, 1871, in Flint, Mich. Fenwick, Benedict Joseph, clergyman, bishop, was born Sept. 3, 1782, in Leonardtown, Md. In 1817 he was elected president of Georgetown college; and was at the same time rector of Trinity college. In 1825 he was appointed second Roman catholic bishop of Boston. He died Aug. 11, 1846, in Boston, Mass. Fenwick, Cuthbert, was born in England. He sat in the assembly of 1648, and in several others. He was speaker of the house of burgesses when it sat separate from the council in 1649. He died in 1655 in Fen-
