Since 1883 he has been professor of history and political economy at Trinity college of Hartford, Conn. He is the author of Four Periods in the Life of the Church; and Essays on American History.

Ferguson, Henry A., painter, artist, was born in Glens Falls, N.Y. He was educated at Trinity college. He is an associate of the national academy of design.

Ferguson, James, civil engineer, astronomer, was born Aug. 31, 1797, in Scotland. He was a valued contributor to discoveries in astronomy; and an assistant in determining the boundary of the United States. In 1847-67 he was assistant astronomer of He the United States naval observatory. died Sept. 26, 1867. Ferguson, John Calvin, educator, college president, translator, was born March 1, 1866, in Canada. In 1886 he graduated from the Boston university, with the degree of A.B.; and subsequently received the degree of Ph.D. from that institution of learning. In 1888-97 he was president of Nanking university; and in 1897-1902 was president of Nanyang college at Shanghai, China. In 1902-03 he was secretary of the Chinese ministry of commerce; and in 1903-06 was chief secretary of the imperial Chinese railway administration. Since 1899 he has been foreign advisor of the viceroys of Nanking

and Wuchang. In 1902-04 he was a member of the commission for treaty revision: in 1901 was sent on a special mission by the Chinese government to investigate the higher commercial schools of Europe and America; and in 1904 was again sent on a special mission by the Chinese government to America in connection with the Canton Hankow railway. He is a member of several learned societies; and has translated several books into Chinese. Ferguson, John P., physician, surgeon, was born Oct. 28, 1865, in Jonesboro, Tenn. He received the rudiments of his education in the public schools of his native state; then attended Milligan college and Washington college; and then entered the Central university of Kentucky, from which institution he received the degree of A. M. In 1892 he graduated with the degree of M.D. from the Jefferson medical college of Philadelphia, Pa. He has attained success in the practice of his profession in Louisville, Ky.; and has been instructor in the hospital college of medicine. He is a member of the American medical and the Mississippi valley medical associations; and a member of the Kentucky state medical society. He is medical examiner of the Ancient order of united
