Pettit. Representatives in Congress Columbia county ha.s been Jo in ed with a number o f other counties at dincrciu times in the formation o f a Congressional district. It w as originally placed in the Tenth district, which in clu d ^ the counties o f Northumber­ land, Union, Lycoming, Luzerne, Bradford, Potter, Susquehanna and T i< ^, with two Con­ gressmen, and w as represented by the follow­ ing persons: William Wilson ana Jare d Irwin, elected 1 8 1 4; William Wilson and Daid Scott, elected 18 16 . In 18 17 Mr. Scott was elected a judge and resigned, and John M urray w as elected to fill the vacancy. John M urray and George Dennison were elected in 18 18; George Dennison and W . C. E llis in 1820. In 182E Ellis resigned, and Thom as M urray, Jr ., w as elected to fill the vacancy. In 1822 Columbia was put m the Ninth dis­ trict. with Union, Northumberland, Luzcm c, Susquehanna. Bradford, Lycom ing, Potter, T ioga and M cKean, havin? three members, as fo llo w s: W. C. Ellis, Samuel M cKean, George K rcam cr, elected 18 2 2; Samuel M cKean, G eorge Krcam cr. In 1832 Columbia w as placed with Luzerne as the Fifteenth district, with one member. A ndrew Beaumont was elected in 1832 and 18 3 4; David Pctrikin in 18 36 and 18 3 8 : B . A . Bidlock in 1840 and 1842. In 1843 W yoming w as joined to Columbia and Luzcm c, forming the Eleventh district. Owen D. Lcib w as elected in 1844 and 1846; Chester Butler in 1848; Hendrick D. Wright in 1850. In 1852 Columbia was in the T w elfth dis­ trict with Luzerne. Montour and Wyoming. Hendrick B . W right was elected in 18 5 2; H enry M . Fuller in >854; John G. Montgomery in 1856 (he died before taking his seat, and in 1857 Paul I.cidy w’as elected ); George W .

W right w as elected). in 18&1 Columbia w as joined with Bradford, Montour, Sullivan, Wyoming and all o f N orth­ umberland, except Low er Mahoning township, in the T w elfth district. Northumberland was transferred to another district in 1862, and the reinaiiiing comities elected ilc n r y W. T racy in 18 6 2; Ulysses M crcur in 18(14, >866, 1868 and 18 7 0; D r. J . D. Straw bridgc in 1872. Mercur resigned in 1872, having been elected lo the Supreme bench, and at a special election, in December, Frank Bunnell was chosen for the sliort term. In 18 7 3 Columbia w as put in the Eleventh district with Montour, Carbon, Monroe and Pike counties; the townships o f Ncscopcck, Blackcrcck, S u g a rla if, Butler, Hazel, Foster, Bcarcrcck, Buck, Salem, Hollenback, Hunting­ ton, in Luzerne county; Fairm ount,'Roaring Brook, Spring Brook, and tlu t part of Scran­ ton south o f Roaring Brook creek and east of the Lackawanna river, in Lackawanna county; and the boroughs of Dunmore, New Columbus, Gouldsboro, White Haven, Jcddo, and Hazle­ ton, in Luzcm c and Lackawanna counties. It w as known as the "Shoestring" district. F . P. Collins was elected in 1874 and 18 7 6; Robert Klotz in 1878 and 18 8 0; John B. Storm in 1882 and l i ^; C. R . Buckalew in 1886 and 18S8. In 1890 the Sixteenth Congressional district was made up o f Columbia, Montour, Northum­ berland and Sullivan counties, and so remains in 1914. S . P. W'olverton w as elected in 1S90 and 18 9 2; M. H . Kulp, 1894 and 1896; R ufus K . Polk. 189S and 1900 (died in office, and Alexander Billm eyer w as elected to HU the un­ expired te rm ); Charles H . Dickcrman, 19 0 2; E . W . Samuels. 19 0 4; John G . M cH enry, 1906, 1908 and 19 10 (died shortly before the expi­ ration o f his third term, and the vacancy was not fille d ): John V . I.cshcr, 19 12 and 1914. State Senators Columbia county w as first placed in a Sena­ torial district with Luzerne. Susquehanna and Union, Columbia and Union i>cing added upon the formation of the counties. T his district elected two senators, Thomas M urray. J r .. and William Ross, M urray being reelected in 18 14 , the first election for senator in which Columbia participated.
