T h e first council meeting w as held in the office o f E d w ard H . B ald y, and the first business transacted w as the election o f Mr. Baldy as clerk of the bo<ly. K dw ard Young was chosen street commissioner at a sa b ry o f twenty dollars a year, and T h o n u s Jam ison was chosen constable. On the 24th o f December, 1849. the council ^ s c d a resolution, making application to the State L ^ is la tu re fo r the erection o f a new county, to lie calletl Montour, with the county scat at Danville. It w as also resolved to fu r­ nish the new county with necessary buildings. On the 29th o f March, 1850. the new coun­ cil was organized. Dr. William H . M agill was reelected burgess and Valentine Best w as rcclcclcil as a member of the council. T he new mcmlKrs were Dr. Isaac Hughes, George B. Brown, Thom as V ’oods, W illiam Morgan. V Valentine Best w as chosen clerk and M. C. Grier was elected treasurer.
