- «The disciples of the sage Gautama approach-
ed him with these words. How, master, may our deliverance be obtained? Graciously enlighten us on this point: Gautama said—‘ deliverance may be obtained by a knowledge of the predica- ments.’ The disciples wanted to know what were these predicaments, and Gautama replied :—‘ Seven predicaments may be enumerated. viz :—‘1) Sub- stance, (2) quality, (3) action, (4) genus, (5) differ- 5725 ence, (6) co-inherence, and (7) non-existence. The language of the treatises in the list just given is invariably very simple, though owing to our ignorance of the special terms and technicalities used by the Sahajiya Vaisnavas, much of their writings is unintelligible to us. The sentences are generally short and rarely loaded with compounds. Here is a passage which may be taken as a. speci- men of the sort of style used by them. We quote from the Karika by Rupa Gosvami who lived 4oo years ago, tT Victory be to Radha and Krisna! First of all a classification of subjects ; proceeding
- গৌতম মুনিকে শিষ্য সকলে জিজ্ঞাসা করিলেন, আমা-
দিগের মুক্তি কি প্রকারে হয়ঃ তাহা কৃপা করিয়া বলহ। তাহাতে গৌতম উত্তর করিতেছেন। তাবং পদার্থ জানিলেই মক্তি হয়। তাহাতে শিষ্যেরা সকলে জিজ্ঞাসা করিলে, পদাথ কতে1? তাহাতে গৌতষ কহিতেছেন। পদার্থ সপ্ত প্রকার । দ্রবা, গুণ, কর্ম, সামান্য, বিশেষ, সমবায়, আতাব। তাহার মধ্যে দ্রব্য নয় প্রকার ।” 1 প্শ্রবাধাবিনোদ রায় । অথ বস্ত নির্ণয় । প্রথষ ইকফেের গুণ নির্ণয় । শব্দগুণ, গন্গগুণ, রূপগ্তণ, রূসগুণ, স্পর্শগুণ, এই bBhasa parich- chada.
