Blaze, Francois Henri Joseph, 1784-1857. CastiL Blaze. A French com- poser and writer on music ; b. at Cavail- lon (Vaucluse). Under the Empire he was successively a painter, an employe", chief of bureau at the prefecture of Vau- cluse, an inspector of libraries, and a wholesale wine-merchant. He played upon several instruments, and had com- posed many romances, and published fugitive pieces under a feigned name. In 1819 he removed to Paris, and devoted


himself to musical journalism and liter- ature. D. in Pans.
