American lover of rare books ; the son
of Robert Lenox, a Scotch merchant
of New York City ; educ. chiefly at
Princeton ; was for some years a mer-
chant, but, being a miUionnaire, he in-
dulged himself in the luxury of collect-
ing rare books, etc., which he bequeathed
to his native city, and thus founded the
Lenox Library.
