18 In the ſame day the LORD [1] made a covenant with Abram, ſaying, [2] Unto thy ſeed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,
20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,
21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgaſhites, and the Jebuſites.
CHAP. XVI.
1 Sarai being barren giveth Hagar to Abram. 4 Hagar being conceived deſpiſeth her miſtreſs, and being harſhly treated runneth away. 7 An angel ſendeth her back to ſubmit herſelf, and informeth her of her ſon's fortunes. 15 Iſhmael is born.
Now Sarai Abram's wife [3] bare him no children: and ſhe had an handmaid, [4] an Egyptian, whoſe name was [5] Hagar.
2 [6] And Sarai ſaid unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD [7] hath reſtrained me from bearing: I pray [8] thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may †† Heb. be builded by her. obtain children by her. And Abram [9] hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
31911. And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram [10] had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.
4 ¶ And he went in unto Hagar, and ſhe conceived: and when ſhe ſaw that ſhe had conceived, her miſtreſs was [11] deſpiſed in her eyes.
5 And Sarai ſaid unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy boſom; and when ſhe ſaw that ſhe had conceived, I was deſpiſed in her eyes: [12] the LORD judge between me and thee.
6 [13] But Abram ſaid unto Sarai, [14] Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her †† Heb. that which is good in thine eyes. as it pleaſeth thee. And when Sarai †† Heb. afflicted her. dealt hardly with her, [15] ſhe fled from her face.
7 ¶ And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderneſs, [16] by the fountain in the way to [17] Shur.
8 And he ſaid, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence cameſt thou? and whither wilt thou go? And ſhe ſaid, I flee from the face of my miſtreſs Sarai.
9 And the angel of the LORD ſaid unto her, Return to thy miſtreſs, and [18] ſubmit thyſelf under her hands.
10 And the angel of the LORD ſaid unto her, [19] I will multiply thy ſeed exceedingly, that it ſhall not be numbered for multitude.
11 And the angel of the LORD ſaid unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and ſhalt bear a ſon, [20] and ſhalt call his name ‖‖ That is, God ſhall hear. Iſhmael; becauſe the LORD hath heard thy affliction.
12 [21] And he will be a wild man; his hand will be againſt every man, and every man's hand againſt him; [22] and he ſhall dwell in the preſence of all his brethren.
13 And ſhe called the name of the LORD that ſpake unto her, Thou God ſeeſt me: for ſhe ſaid, Have I alſo here looked after him [23] that ſeeth me?
14 Wherefore the well was called [24] ‖‖ That is, the well of him that liveth and ſeeth me. Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is [25] between Kadeſh and Bered.
15 ¶ And [26] Hagar bare Abram a ſon: and Abram called his ſon's name, which Hagar bare, [27] [[w:Iſhmael|Iſhmael]].
161910. And Abram was fourſcore and ſix years old, when Hagar bare Iſhmael to Abram.
CHAP. XVII.
1 God reneweth his covenant with Abram. 5 Abram's name is changed in token of greater bleſſings. 9 Circumciſion is inſtituted. 15 Sarai's name is changed, and Iſaac, with the bleſſing of a numerous iſſue, promiſed her. 23 Abraham, his ſon Iſhmael, and all his men-ſervants are circumciſed.
And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD [28] appeared to Abram, and ſaid unto him, [29] I am the Almighty God; [30] walk before me, and be thou ‖‖ Or, upright, or, ſincere. [31] perfect.
2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and [32] will multiply thee exceedingly.
3 And Abram [33] fell on his face: and God talked with him, ſaying,
4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou ſhalt be [34] a father of †† Heb. multitude of nations. many nations.
5 ¶ Neither ſhall thy name any more be called Abram, but [35] thy name ſhall be ‖‖ That is, Father of a great multitude. Abraham; [36] for a father of many nations have I made thee.
6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make [37] nations of thee, and [38] kings ſhall come out of thee.
7 And I will [39] eſtabliſh my covenant between me and thee and thy ſeed after thee in their generations for an everlaſting covenant, [40] to be a God unto thee, and to [41] thy ſeed after thee.
8 And [42] I will give unto thee, and to thy ſeed after thee, the land †† Heb. of thy ſojournings. [43] wherein thou art a ſtranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlaſting poſſeſſion; and [44] I will be their God.
