SONGS.

When Love first came to me,
    He had two companions sweet;
Pleasure with her bright cup,
    Hope with her silver feet.
But Hope and Pleasure fled,
    As their wings were of the wind,
And they never came again—
    But Love remained behind.
Oh! why did Love remain,
    With his light and colour fled—
For what avails a mourner
    To the absent and the dead?
