We parted from our hospitable friends with much regret ; and, after a most agreeable sojourn under their kind roof, left for Moentillan, where we passed
the night at the house of a friend of Mr. Z 's.
We started next morning to see the ruins of Mandoet, or Mandoot, which consist of a large square-built temple surrounded by a fosse, and reached on one side by a small stone bridge. The exterior walls are sculptured with numerous figures of Durga, and other Javanese deities, much worn hy time. Crossing the bridge, we mounted a few- steps, and, traversing a short })assage, gained the interior of the building.
