By the method adopted, a regular record is made of the state of things at very short intervals, furnishing the data for a mean result for any required period, and also the means of detecting, in most cases, the causes of apparent discrepancies. It also relieves the experimenter from the distraction of having numerous exact observations to make in a very short time, and leaves him much more at liberty to exercise a vigilant watch over the general course of the experiment.
49. As it may be useful to experimenters, not accustomed to this mode of observing, and, at the same time, afford the reader some means of judging of the accuracy of the results obtained in these experiments, the following extracts are given from the original note-books. The extracts include the data observed for experiment numbered 30 in table II. This experiment is selected, simply, because it gave the maximum coefficient of effect.
