. . . This threatening message^ was sent verbatim to the Pope, because he (Mai) knew very well that owing to certain disagreements now existing between the Pope and the cardi- nals, and of which Burgo gave him (Mai) notice, his Holiness would be rather glad than otherwise, and also that the Em- peror's enemies may know at once how matters stand, and not be surprised at what the Lutherans say and profess to believe ; for certainly, excepting in matters of faith, in most other things concerning Rome, the right is on their side.
