simple and compound leaves should in this tribe be uncon- nected with other characters, and the very few plants in which compound leaves occur differ widely from each other in the form of their flowers or direction of their segments.

Desc. Tribus. — Flores diclines, monoici, Masculi cum rudimento, saepius minuto et antheris occultato, pistilli : raro stigmatibus ovulisque fere ut in femineis. Feminei antheris manifestis saepe donatis polline sed semper efFceto. Calyx monophyllus, 5-fidus, nunc 5-partitus, raro 4- v. 6-fidus, aequalis, coloratus ; aestivatione valvata rarissime induplicata; deciduus, quandoque marcescens. Corolla nulla. Gynostemium, columna genitalia sustinens, calyce brevius v. longius raro abbreviatum fere nullum, in cujus apice AntJierce subsessiles quindecim, nunc decern, quan- doque viginti (raro quinque) urceolum abbreviatum cyathi- formem rarissime tubulosum terminantes, in capitulum inordinatim congestae, v. in fasciculos quinque cum ovariis alternantes polyadelphae (nunc dum decern v. quinque, saepius in serie simplici dispositae) ; biloculares, loculis dis- tinctis, parallelis (raro divaricatis). Pollen simplex, laeve, sphaeroideum. Ovaria 5, raro 4 v. 6 (rarissime 10 — 12), leviter cohaerentia, polysperma (nunc tetra- v. disperma, raro monosperma). Ovida angulo interno ovarii, dum inde- 226] finita duplici raro quadruplici serie, inserta. Styli tot quot ovaria, coaliti v. arete approximate et tunc saepe arete deflexi (nunc ad basin fere clistincti, quandoque nulli). Stigmata in unicum subcapitatum quinquelobum cohaerentia, v. distincta subcylindracea indivisa. Pericarpia : Folliculi coriacei v. lignei (raro submembranacei) hand ante maturi- tatem seminum dehiscentes (in nonnullis in quibus ovula definita (2 v. 4) cito post faecundationem aperientes, foliacei) (raro clausi, nucamentacei). Semina aptera rarissime apice alata), umbilico saepe omnino nudo, quandoque strophiola parva, rarissime si unquam ? arillo carnoso incompleto ? aucto.
