Τίτος Κοΐνκτιος, στρατηγὸς ὕπατος Ῥωμαίων, Χυρετιέων | τοῖς ταγοῖς καὶ τῆι χαίρειν. Ἐπεὶ καὶ ἐν τοῖς λοιποῖς πᾶσιν | φανερὰν πεποήκαμεν τήν τε ἰδίαν καὶ τοῦ δήμου τοῦ Ῥωμαίων | προαίρεσιν ἢν ἔχομεν εἰς ὑμᾶς ὁλοσχερῶς, βεβουλήμεθα καὶ ‖ ἐν τοῖς ἑξῆς ἐπιδεῖξαι κατὰ πᾶν μέρος προεστηκότες | τοῦ ἐνδόξου, ἵνα μηδ' ἐν τούτοις ἔχωσιν ἡμᾶς κατα|λαλεῖν οἱ οὐκ ἀπὸ τοῦ βελτίστου εἰωθότες ἀνα|στρέφεσθαι. Ὅσαι γάρ ποτε ἀπολείπονται κτήσεις | ἔγγειοι καὶ οἰκίαι τῶν καθηδουσῶν εἰς τὸ δημόσιον ‖ τὸ Ῥωμαίων, πάσας δίδομεν τῆι ὑμετέραι πόλει, | ὅπως καὶ ἐν τούτοις μάθητε τὴν καλοκαγαθίαν ἡμῶν | καὶ ὅτι τελέως ἐν οὐθενὶ φιλαργυρῆσ[α]ι βεβουλήμεθα, | περὶ πλείστου ποιούμενοι χάριτα καὶ φιλοδοξίαν. Ὅσοι μέν|τοι μὴ κεκομισμένοι εἰσὶν τῶν ἐπιβαλλόντων αὐτοῖς, ‖ ἐὰν ὑμᾶς διδάξωσιν καὶ φαίνωνται εὐγνώμονα λέ|γοντες, στοχαζομένων ὑμῶν ἐκ τῶν ὑπ' ἐμοῦ γεγραμ|μένων ἐγκρίσεων, κρίνω δίκαιον εἶναι ἀποκαθίστασ|θαι αὐτοῖς. | Ἔρρωσθε.

From Chyretiae. This is the earliest document from inscriptional sources which deals with the relations of Rome and the Greek states. For this reason we have included it here, although Greece was not subject to Rome at this time. The Aetolians as allies of Rome had captured and sacked the city of Chyretiae in 200 B.C. (Livy, 31.41.5). The property of the partisans of Philip in the city after the battle of Cynoscephalae was confiscated, and became part of the public property of Rome. When war with Antiochus threatened, Flamininus instituted a milder policy towards the Greek cities. Accordingly he restored to the Chyretiaeans all lands confiscated from their
