This book is published on the Shreve Foundation established at Princeton University in memory of Benjamin Davis Shreve of the Class of 1856 by the bequest of his window "for the study of the history of nations, both ancient and modern, to ascertain the cause of their decay, degeneracy, extinction, and destruction, and to show the dangers that now exist and arising which, if not checked, will injure, if not destroy, our free government." In 1924 Professor Abbott was elected as the first Fellow of this Foundation.
