MEMORANDUM FOR THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE
SUBJECT: The Van Fleet Report on His Mission to tho Far East
Mr. Cutler has asked me to advise you that he has discussed briefly with the President the Van Fleet Report. He feels that the broad views of General Van Fleet should be made known to the members of the National Security Council, even though they may be somewhat different from present policies, in order that it cannot be said in the future that the views of such a distinguished person who is very familiar with the Far East were not considered in reviewing U. S. policy toward the Far East. Therefore, Mr. Cutler intends to give the NSC a very presentation of General Van Fleet's views in connection with the discussion of the Far East, scheduled for the meeting on Thursday, 28 October.
