III. “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself[1], and take up his cross[2] and follow Me.”

IV. “The foxes have holes[3], and the birds of the air nests, but the Son of Man[4] hath not where to lay His head.”

V. “He that loveth father or mother more than Me is not worthy[5] of Me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.”

VI. “He that loveth his life shall lose it, and he that hateth his life in this world keepeth it unto life eternal.”

VII. “The kingdom of heaven suffereth violence[6], and the violent bear it away.”

VIII. “What doth it profit[7] a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange[8] shall a man give for his soul?”

IX. “No man can come to Me[9], except the Father who hath sent Me, draw him[10]; and I will raise him [11] up at the last day.” — “If any man keep My word[12], he shall not see death[13] for ever.”

X. “Come to Me all you that labour and are burdened [14], and I will refresh you[15]. Take up My yoke[16] upon you and learn of

  1. Deny himself. All that is bad in himself, pride, avarice, luxury and so forth.
  2. His cross. Whatever trials, troubles, or sufferings God may send him.
  3. Holes. In which to take refuge.
  4. But the Son of Man. Does not possess oil earth even enough space whereon He could rest His Head.
  5. Not worthy. Is not worthy to be My disciple, or to have a share in the Redemption wrought by Me.
  6. Violence. Is only to be obtained by means of violent effort.
  7. Doth it profit? Or what would it profit &c.
  8. Exchange. How shall it be redeemed, once it is lost?
  9. Come to Me. Can become My disciples, believing in and loving Me.
  10. Draw him. By his grace.
  11. Raise him. Him, that is, who, by corresponding with grace, becomes and remains My disciple.
  12. Keep My word. Receives it with faith and lives in accordance with it.
  13. Not see death. His soul and body shall live for ever, so that the death of his body will not be a terror to him, but will be welcome, as being his introduction to a better and everlasting life.
  14. Burdened. Either with grief or with the weight of sin.
  15. Refresh you. With consolations and peace.
  16. My yoke. My law of love.
