Gutting Slot in Vise Casting

The operation shown on this page is that of milling a slot on the bottom of the base casting of a milling machine vise, such as that shown in Fig. 18. The casting is clamped directly to the table and the farther end is supported on parallels.

An interlocking side milling cutter, 3/4'' wide, is used, and the table is fed longitudinally. The value of the interlocking cutter is apparent here, for it is essential that the width of slot milled be maintained after the cutters have been ground. This is accomplished by packing thin washers between the two parts of the cutter.
