TEM, Fcrafmuch as the Great Men and Com- mons of the Realm before this Time, and now in this prefent Parliament, have grievoufly complain- ed, for that the King's Butler and his Lieutenants in div.-rs Places and Ports of the Realm, have ingroffed and taken by Colour of their Office, for the Houfe and Expences of the King, * and by fuch Colour have arrefted the Wines which Merchants brought into the faid Realm, and holden them fo long in Arreft, that the Great Men and Commons, and other of the Pvealm, cannot thereof make their Pur- veyance, nor Merchants their Profit, and often- times by fuch Colour have ingrofTed and taken of them fo many Tuns of Wine above that was need- ful for the King, that they have commonly fold the fame, and thereof made, their lingular Profit, and as much as other Merchants and Vintners in the Realm, to the great Damage of the faid * Merchants and other :" ' (z) Whereupon the King deftring to or- dain Remedy, of the Aifent of the Great Men and Commons in this prefent Parliament hath ordained, That the Butler, nor any of his Lieutenants, fhall not buy, ingrofs, nor take by Colour of their Office, nor in other Manner to their proper Ufe, nor of others, more Wines for the Koufe and Expence of the King than they have in Commandment, upon Pain of Im- prifonment of their Bodies, and to be ranfomed at the King's Will. (3) And as n*tich as they fhall take by Force of the faid Warrant, fhall be taken within Ten Days, and (that done) the Merchants of the faid Wines may, and it fhall be lawful to them, of the Remnant of the faid Wines another Time to make their Profit, notwithstanding any Arreft made upon fuch Wines by the Butler, or any of his Lieutenants aforefaid.'
