" (6) Sithence which Ordinance the faid Merchants " Aliens have been always demeaned and ruled, as well ■" in the Staples, as in other of the King's Courts, " after the Form of the faid Ordinance, untii now " of late they have been thereof retrained and im- " peached by Colour of another Statute made in the " Parliament holden at Wtjhninjter the Second Year " of King Henry, Father to our Lord the King that " now is ; (7) by which Statute, for the great Mif- sc chiefs, Damages, and Difherifons, which daily do " happen through the Realm, as well in cafe of the " Death of a Man, as in cafe of Freehold and other " Cafes, by them that pafs in Inquefts, in the faid " Cafe, which were common Jurors,, and other which ci had but little or nothing to live uy.on but by fuch " Inquefts, and which had nothing to lofe becaufe " of their falfe Oaths, whereby they do. the more " lightly offend their Confciences ; ( 8 ) and for Amend- " ment and Correction thereof to be had, it was or- " dained and ftablifhed, That no Perfon be admitted " to pafs in any Inqueft upon Trial of the Death of " a Man, nor in any Inqueft between Party and Party " in Plea Real or Perfonal, whereof the Debt and the " Damages declared do amount, to Forty Marks, ex- " cept the fame Perfon have Lands or Tenements " to the yearly Value of Forty Shillings above all " Charges ; (9) becaufe of which Reftraint and Im- " peachment fo made to divers Merchants Aliens, " many of the fame Merchants Aliens have with- " drawn, and daily do withdraw them, and efchew " to come and be converfant on this Side the Sea, and " likely it is, that all the fame Merchants Aliens will " depart out of the fame Realm of England, if the faid " laft Statute be not more plainly declared, and the " faid Merchants Aliens ruled, governed, and de- meaned in fuch Inquefts, according to the firft Or- dinance aforefaid, to the great diminifhing of the King's Subfidies, and grievous-Lofs and Damage of all his faid Realm of England.
