An A£l for the more efFedlnal preventing of Frauds and Abu'es committed by Perfons employed in the Manu failure of Hats, and in the Woollen, Linnen, Fuitian, Cotton, Iron, Leather, Furr, Hemp, Flax, Mohair and Silk Manufactures ; and for preventing unlawful Combi- nations of Journeymen Dyers and Journeymen Hot PrciTers, and of all Perfons employed in the faid feveral Manufaftures ; and for the better Payment of their Wages. ^7 HERE AS by an Aft made in the thirteenth Year of his prefent Majefty's Reign, intituled, An %' Aui to explain and amend an A^ made in the fir Ji Year of the Reipi of her late Majejly ^leen Anne, intituled, An Aft for the more efteftual preventing the Abufes and Frauds of Perfons employed in the working up the Woollen, Linnen, Fullian, Cotton and Iron Manufaftures of this Kingdom, and for extendi;!^ the faid Act to the A'LwufaSfures of Leather, it is amongft other Things enafted. That if any Perfon or Perfons hired or employed in the working up of any Woollen, Linnen, FufHan, Cotton or Iron Manufaftures, fliall purloin, imbezil, fecrece, i'ell, pawn, exchange or otherwife illegally difpofe of any the Materials with which he, fhe or they fnall be refpediively entrufted to work up fuch Woollen, Lin- nen, Fuflian, Cotton or Iron Manufaftures, whether the fame be or be not firft made up or manufac- tured, or fhall reel falfe or ihort Yarn, the Perfon or Perfons fo olFending, and being thereof convifted in Manner prefcribed by the faid Aft of the fiift Year of her laid late Majelty's Reign, fhall forfeit Double the Value of the Damages which the Owner or Owners of fuch Materials Ihall refpeftively fuftain there- by, together with full Cofts of Profecution for every fuch Offence : And in cafe immediate Payment of the refpeftive Forfeitures, together with fuch Cofts of Profecution as aforefaid, fhall be neglcfte'd or re- fufcd to be made, that then it fliall and may be lawful to and for the fame Juilice of the Peace, before whom fuch Conviction fliall be made, to caufe the Ofrender or Offenders to be committed to the Houfe of Correftion, to be there whipped and kept to hard Labour for any Time not exceeding fourteen Days: And in cafe of a further Conviftion for a fecond or other fubfec[uent Oitence for imbezil, ng or purloining any of the Materials in the faid Aft of the firft Year of her laid late Majefty's Reign mentioned, that the Perfon or Peribns fo offending fhall, for every fecond or other fub'equent Offence, forfeit four times the Value of the Damages which the Owner or Owners of fuch iVIatcrials (whether the fame be or. be not_ made up or manufafturcdj ihall fuftain thereby, together with fuch Cofts of Prolecution, as fhall be adjudged reafonable by the Juftice before whom fuch Od-ender or Offenders fliall be refpeftively convifted : And in cafe immediate Payment of the refpeftive Forfeitures, together with fuch Coils of Profecution as aforefaid, fhall be ne;:lefted or refuied to be made, that then luch Juftice, or any other Juftice of the Peace for the County, Riding, Divifion, City, Town or Place where fuch Ofnences fhall be committed, fliall cauie the f.id Offenders to be committed to the Houfe of Correftion, to be there kept to hard Labour for any Time not exceeding three Months, nor lefs than one Month, as to fuch Juftice fliall fcem reafonable, and alfo during the Time of fuch Commitment iliall caufe the faid C)ffender or Oftenders to be publickly whipped in the Market Town where fuch Offender or OUenders fhall be re- rcfpeftively committed, at the Market Place or Crofs of fuch Town, once or oftener, as to fuch Jullice fliall feem reafonable : And it is by the faid Aft of the thirteenth Yeir of his prefent Majefty's Reign alfo furthefenafted. That every Perfon or Perfons who fhall buy or receive, accept or take, by way of Gift, pawn, pledge or (ale of or from any of the Perfons in the faid A6t of the firft Year of her faid late M.-je- fty's Reign mentioned, any Vv^ooUen, Linnen, Fuflian, Cotton or Iron Manufiftures, either before or after the (Itme fliall be manufaftured or converted into merchantable Wares, knowing the fame to be (b purloined or imbezilled, and being thereof lawfully convifted, ihall feverally fufter the like Forfeitures and^.j Penalties as are by the faid yfts ici'pcftivcly infiifted on Perfons purloining or imbezilling luch of the Ma-, tcrials or Manufaftures enumerated in the faid Afts refpeetively ; all which Foi feitures, when rccovi;red,'J arc by the faid Aft of the thirteenth Year of his prefent Majefty's Reign direfted to be applied in Alanner'l following ; that is to i'ay, one Moiety thereof to the Ufc of the Party or Parties injured, and the other j Moiety to the Ufe of the Poor of the Parifli only where the Offence fljail be committed, with ihe likeiJ Liberty and Benefit of Appealing to all Parties, as is given in arid by the faid Aft of the firft Year of her i faid late Majeify : And it is by the laid Aft of the thirteenth Year of his prefent Majefty's Reign alfo fur- ther enafted. That if any Perfon or Perfons hired or employed in cutting, paring, wafhing, drelling, few- ing, making up, or otherwife mnnufadturing of Gloves, Breeches, Leather, Skins, Boots, Shc^es, Slip-I pers. Wares or other C^oods or Merchandizes, to be made Ufe of in any of the Trades or Employments,"] or in Manner laft-mcntioned, or in any Branch or Particular thereof, fliall fraudulently purloin, imbezil,! fecrete, fell, pawn or exchange all or any Part of the Gloves, Breeches, Leather, Skins, Parings Shreads of Gloves or I^eathcr, or other A'latcrials with which he, ihe or they fliall be entruiled to workj up or manufafturc, or fliali purloin, imbezil, fecrete, fell, pawn or exchange any Gloves, Breeches,' Boots, Shoes, Slippers or Wares, when made, wrought up or manufaftured, or do or wilfully permit any' other Aft, to kJlen the Value of fuch, or any Part of fuch Gloves, Breeches, Leather, Skins, Parings or Shreads of Gloves or Leather, Boots, Shoes, Slippers or other Wares laft particularized, either before or after the fame fliall be refpeftively fo made into Wares, and be thereof lawfully convifted in .Manner prefcribej by the iaid laft mentioned Aft, before one or more Juftice or Juftices of the Peace for the County, Riding, Divifion, City, Town or Place where fuch Offence fliall be committed, or where the Party or Parties lb charged fliall refide or inliabit ; luch Juiiice or Juftices fliall and may award the Per- fon or Perfons fo offending, to make a reafonable and fuiuble Recompence and Sati'sfaftion for every Of- ' fence I
