clip reached 33,000 tons. Agricultural industries are 'said to have advanced recently. In 1894, the area under wheat was 203,796 hectares ; under maize, 125,731 hectares. The estimated wheat yield in 1897 was 300,000 tons. Tobacco, olives, and the vine are also cultivated. The acquisition of land is facilitated by public companies. There are 21,045 farmers, of whom 10,853 cultivate their own land. In the northern Departments several gold mines are worked, and silver, copper, lead, magnesium, and lignite coal are found. In the department of Rivera, during the eleven years 1885-95, the gold yield was 1,118,220 grammes; in 1895, 61,126 grammes; in 1896, 55,998 grammes ; in 1897, 87,336 grammes, •
